Let's figure out how Cordiamine affects the cardiovascular system: does it increase or decrease blood pressure, is it possible to increase low blood pressure with medication, is it worth doing?
The drug is prescribed by doctors to normalize general well-being in acute conditions. The medication is a respiratory analgesic that can quickly relieve asphyxia, cardiac dysfunction, shock to the body, due to its effect on the nervous system and blood pressure.
Pharmacological group
The drug Cordiamin belongs to the group of analeptics, non-selective stimulants of the central nervous system. The effect of the drug is mixed, manifested in providing not only a stimulating effect on the central nervous system, but also on chemoreceptors. It has the most pronounced effect on the vasomotor and respiratory centers of the brain. Under the influence of Cordiamin, nerve impulse transmission between neurons improves, which provokes an increase in the sensitivity and excitability of the respiratory center in response to natural stimuli (for example, carbon dioxide). Stimulation of the vasomotor center of the brain increases peripheral vascular resistance, which causes an increase in blood pressure.
Stimulation of chemoreceptors causes increased breathing. It is the peripheral action of the drug Cordiamin that distinguishes it from other analeptics. The drug is a direct antagonist of hypnotic medications and narcotic substances, which makes it possible to use it for intoxication with these drugs.
Cordiamine creates conditions for deeper breathing, normalization of blood pressure levels and the return of an adequate perception of the surrounding world.
The product is easily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. The therapeutic effect occurs 2–4 minutes after injection and 10–20 minutes after oral administration. The duration of action varies from 1 to 4 hours. Metabolized by the liver. The drug is excreted in the urine.
Glucose for low blood pressure
Glucose is an easily digestible carbohydrate, meaning it serves as an energy source for the body. With its deficiency, disruptions occur in biochemical processes, which affects the functioning of all organs.
Glucose is used for a sharp decrease in blood pressure (shock, collapse). To increase the pressure, a 10/20/40% solution is injected intravenously. This has a number of positive effects:
- increased volume of urine excreted;
- increased blood osmotic pressure;
- activation of metabolic processes;
- dilation of blood vessels;
- improvement of myocardial contractility.
Glucose also removes toxic substances, activating the functioning of the liver. After intravenous administration of the solution, intravascular osmotic pressure increases, and fluid from nearby tissues enters the vessels.
Thus, glucose, entering tissue cells, participates in the biochemical process, saturating the body with energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate. Glucose is excreted from the body along with urine.
Indications for use
The use of Cordiamin is justified in various pathological conditions characterized by depression of the central nervous system and circulatory disorders. You should not take the drug yourself. Before starting therapy, you should consult with an experienced physician.
for adults
Indications for adult patients are:
- respiratory failure;
- shock of various origins;
- collapse;
- non-infectious circulatory disorders (including those characterized by decreased vascular tone);
- intoxication with barbiturates, narcotic drugs, hypnotics and other substances that have a depressing effect on the central nervous system;
- fainting;
- infectious circulatory disorders;
- asphyxia.
for children
The drug Cordiamin is prescribed for children for the same conditions as for adult patients. One of the most popular indications for use in this category of patients is asphyxia in newborns. In this case, Cordiamine acts as an element of complex treatment.
for pregnant women and during lactation
Due to insufficient knowledge of the safety and justification of the use of Cordiamin by pregnant or lactating women, it is not recommended to take this drug for this category of patients.
Reviews
I take Cordiamine drops for low blood pressure. I suffer from vegetative-vascular dystonia of the hypotonic type. I am very pleased with the effect of this drug. There were no adverse symptoms. The low price and good quality are captivating.
Due to cervical osteochondrosis, I often feel dizzy, sometimes I even lose consciousness due to vasospasm. A friend recommended Cordiamine, and, you know, it’s a really good drug. Helps quickly and normalizes blood pressure. Now it is always with me, in my makeup bag. I recommend to all.
I didn’t like Cordiamin, but my friends accept it and praise it very much. Apparently, each organism has its own suitable drug. I can’t say anything bad or good about the medicine. But thanks for the article, it’s informative and interesting.
Applications and dosages
Cordiamine should be taken regardless of meal time. Depending on the release form, the drug is administered parenterally or orally. Intravenous injections must be carried out quite slowly. In order to reduce the degree of pain during intramuscular or subcutaneous administration, it is allowed to inject a small amount of novocaine into the injection site.
for adults
When administering Cordiamine parenterally, the recommended dosage can be from 1 to 2 ml of solution 1-3 times a day. The maximum single dose is 2 ml. However, in case of drug intoxication, a subcutaneous or intravenous emergency injection can be 5 ml.
The oral solution should be taken 2-3 times a day in a dosage of 15 to 40 drops of the drug.
The daily amount of the drug should not exceed 6 ml, regardless of the dosage form.
for children
Children are prescribed an injection solution in a dosage of 0.1 to 0.75 ml. The drug should be taken exclusively subcutaneously.
The number of drops for taking the oral solution is calculated based on the age of the child. For example, if a child is 12 years old, then a single dose should be 12 drops.
for pregnant women and during lactation
Pregnancy and breastfeeding are contraindications to the use of Cordiamin.
Ginseng to increase blood pressure
Hypertension is not a death sentence!
It has long been a well-established opinion that it is impossible to get rid of HYPERTENSION forever. To feel relief, you need to continuously drink expensive pharmaceutical drugs. Is it really? Let's figure out how hypertension is treated here and in Europe...
Ginseng has a tonic effect. It dilates blood vessels, due to which the blood is enriched with oxygen, resulting in an increase in pressure. Therefore, it is not advisable for hypertensive patients to take ginseng, because it does not lower, but increases blood pressure. Although sometimes with arterial hypertension you can drink weak tea or take aqueous extract of ginseng.
Tablets, tinctures and other preparations containing ginseng are recommended in case of lack of oxygen. For example, ginseng is necessary for people working at great depths (miners) or altitudes (astronauts).
To increase blood pressure, it is better to choose alcohol tinctures, which should be taken in small quantities. After all, an overdose can harm a person’s health (nosebleeds, allergies, headaches, a jump in blood pressure, nausea, etc.).
Ginseng has a healing effect slowly. To do this, tablets and tinctures with this plant must be taken systematically for at least 14 days.
Side effects
The most popular side effect of Cordiamin is the manifestation of seizures, mainly of the clonic type. If the dosage of the drug is increased, the risk of developing clonic-tonic seizures increases.
Also, while taking the drug, the following phenomena may occur:
- nausea and vomiting;
- skin rash (most often accompanied by itching);
- hyperemia of the patient’s face and entire upper body;
- feeling of restlessness and anxiety;
- facial hyperkinesis;
- feeling of pain at the injection site;
- hives.
Contraindications
The described drug, as noted above, sharply increases blood pressure
That is why it should be treated with extreme caution, just like any other potent medicine. Side effects of Cordiamin include:
- twitching of lips or eyelids;
- allergies (if the patient is intolerant to the active substance);
- anxiety, irritability;
- itching of the skin of the face;
- redness of the skin.
Side effects
Also, taking the drug is contraindicated for older people and those who suffer from tachycardia or hypertension. Cordiamine should not be taken at very high temperatures.
Interaction with other drugs
With the simultaneous use of phenothiazide derivatives, para-aminosalicylic acid and drugs intended for general anesthesia, a decrease in the effectiveness of Cordiamin is observed.
Reserpine enhances the convulsive effect of the drug.
The medication significantly reduces the effect of narcotic, sedative, antipsychotic, antiepileptic drugs and anxiolytics.
Cordiamine enhances the effects of antidepressants and medications that stimulate the central nervous system.
Analogs
There are many analogues and substitutes for Cordiamin:
- Niketamid-Eskom is a complete analogue of Cordiamin. It is produced in drops and solution for oral administration, in ampoules for subcutaneous, intravenous and intramuscular administration. The drug has the same indications for use as Cordiamine. It can occur in children from birth if they do not have hyperthermia.
- Sulfocamphocaine is an analeptic and is a substitute for Cordiamin in the therapeutic group. It is produced in the form of an injection solution. The drug should be used with caution in pregnant women and breastfeeding women.
- Ammonia is available in the form of a solution for inhalation and external use. It stimulates the respiratory center and is a substitute for Cordiamine in the therapeutic group. Ammonia, according to strict indications, can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- Armanor. The drug is produced in tablets and is used as a peripheral respiratory analeptic in adult patients with respiratory failure, which is observed against the background of COLD. The drug should not be prescribed to pregnant and breastfeeding patients, persons with individual intolerance to the composition of the drug and liver pathologies.

Cordiamine (international name - Nikethamide) is, first of all, an effective respiratory analeptic, capable of eliminating asphyxia, shock, collapse, etc.
In order to use the drug correctly, it is necessary to study the mechanism of action of Cordiamin, how the medicine affects blood pressure, how to take it, etc., otherwise you can cause irreparable harm to your own health. The composition of the described drug is extremely simple - it is an aqueous solution of the active substance (niketamide). It is Niketamide, which dissolves in specially purified water, that is the active component in all forms of Cordiamin. The concentration of this substance is always the same - 25% or, in other words, 250 mg/1 ml of the drug. Cordiamine does not contain any other additional substances.
